RSE Educational Mission
Understanding science is critically important for current and future generations to appreciate and understand how our actions change our planet.
Science from Scientists is a unique organization that is able to go into schools, during school hours, with real scientists and teach students. (Learn More: www.ScienceFromScientists.org)
By partnering with Sci-Sci, our real-world efforts for solving environmental problems can be turned into exciting lessons, and then delivered in schools to educate the next generation to make good decisions about the environmental impact of their actions.
To implement our STEM outreach, RSE has worked with Sci-Sci to develop a visible presence in the educational programs being created by the America’s Cup Endeavour Program for the America’s Cup event village in Bermuda, as well as in their local school system.
Our Partnership with Science From Scientists
RSE has entered into a strategic relationship with Science from Scientists to achieve our educational mission. RSE's programs are exciting, current and impactful. Science from Scientists is a 501(c)3 non-profit, which has developed a world-leading capability to deliver science content in the classroom on a national and international scale. "Science from Scientists is excited to work with RSE to make environmentally relevant STEM lessons come alive in the classroom," says Erika Angle, Executive Director of Science from Scientists and RSE board member.
About Science From Scientists
We Are Falling Behind in STEM Early Education
We are facing a crisis in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) workforce training pipeline. STEM job positions are growing by 17%, compared to non-STEM jobs, which are growing at a rate of 9.8%. The National Center of Education Statistics reports that of the 32% of adults who earn a Bachelor’s degree, only 29% will earn a degree in STEM. As a country, we are not producing enough STEM workers to take advantage of the growth in STEM jobs. Lack of competency and low interest in STEM are drivers of this workforce gap.
In the US, students are routinely outperformed by their international peers – we rank 18th in the world in science literacy. The Business Higher Education Foundation determined that by the time students reach high school, 83% report lacking proficiency and/or interest in STEM. This means that we must look back to elementary and middle school to address STEM challenges.
Creating a Hands-On Learning Environment
Science from Scientists’ mission is to improve the attitudes and aptitudes of 3rd-8th graders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). They send real, charismatic scientists into classrooms every other week during the school day throughout the entire academic year to inspire students and improve STEM competency by teaching hands-on, frameworks-relevant lessons to ensure that our nation’s youth is globally competitive in STEM. Their collaborative program is cost effective, scalable and has shown measurable impact.
In addition, because the program takes place during school hours and the teachers work elbow-to-elbow alongside our scientists to select and deliver the sequence of lessons for their classrooms, Science from Scientists provides an “embedded” Professional Development program to help partner teachers with limited science backgrounds feel more prepared and confident to teach high-quality, hands-on science lessons to their students.
